Chess

Chess defined as a "game for two with 16 pieces each, played on a chess board." The sixteen pieces include on each side one king, one queen, two bishops, two knights, and two rooks. In the front row is a set of eight pawns. Usually the pawns are identical. The two sides are different in color - usually one dark and one light color.  The board has 64 squares.

The game was devised over 1400 years ago - either in India or China. The game is an imitation of warfare with the sole objective being the capture of the opponent's king.

Perhaps this history is the reason that there are so many military variations in the themed sets.
